Intriguing Artwork using Baroque and Surrealist Elements
It is my goal to create artworks that provoke intrigue through content and execution. The content of my work is usually derived from myths, legends, and visual symbols. My work is executed using a combination of Baroque and Surrealist elements and techniques.
The content of my work began as illustrative reactions to stories. The resulting works were strictly narrative. My more successful pieces are those in which the viewer must adopt a more active role and become more engaged in a work to derive meaning.
The characters in my paintings are animals, mainly birds. I made this subject decision for both their similarities and disimilarities to humans. The correlations between human and animal behaviors and expressions are obvious in nature and have, hence, been referenced in one way or another in all forms of art. Beyond what is seen on the surface, animal maturation and socialization parallels that of humans. Therefor, when I use animals in my paintings, they communicate as the figure would. On the other hand, animals' visual compositions are as unique as our own and communicate less "directly", creating viewer intrigue.
Each narrative is executed using characters in combiination with objects/symbols both classical and contemporary.
